An airborne Alliance Skiff threatens your men and to take it out you’ll need to reach a nearby UA 571-D, and anti-aircraft gun. Unfortunately it lies on the other side of a squad of Alliance soldiers hidden in trenches. No one leaves Serenity, you just learn to live there. Let’s go duck hunting"

Find a Crew - Find A Job - Keep Flying
(or in New Zealand it’s more like  Stay Home - Find a Game – Keep Safe)

With Rob Sadler

The difficulty is I’m on Planet Isolation and don’t have any other crew members, so I went through my boardgame stash looking for a one-player game, and there like a shining beacon is Firefly. Firefly was one of my first boardgame playtests with the Battlefront/Gale Force 9 Team and we would have play-tested this back around 2012/2013, it was my first glimpse into the Serenity/Firefly ‘Verse’ and I couldn’t believe that there weren’t multiple series of this show!!
One of my isolation tasks is to learn the great games I have and in post isolation teach them to others. I needed a fresh recap of the rules and then set it up and give it a crack. I decided I may need some in-game changes to replicate the tricks other players may play on me and to not make it too easy.

 Firefly The Game

The first thing I modified was the movement of the Alliance Cruiser and the Reaver Cutter. I decided that a random movement was appropriate. I numbered the spaces they could go and randomly rolled (if this was more than 6 then I used two dice with the first space being a two on the dice). This seemed to work, but in my next game I will change this to move towards my ship where possible to make it a bit more cutthroat.
The next idea I had was when I choose to ‘Mosey Along’ (you can move one space to conserve fuel and there is no Nav Card drawn), so any time I Mosey Along I roll a 1D6. If I score a six then I have to flip over a Nav Card just like during other movement. This added a small element of risk and discouraged taking the easy route.
Like any game I haven’t picked-up in a while I was bound to get some rules wrong, or I needed to have a good read thus slowing the first play through down a little. I am sure when I have another run I will find I was doing something wrong, but hey, lets just call that a variation!!

I finished the game. I think I was helped by being able to have more crew with one of the Ship Upgrade cards I used. I enjoyed being back in the Firefly Verse and relearning the game. I especially enjoyed having the dinosaur (the first player gets a Dinosaur Marker), for the whole game proudly on my dashboard, and I was reminded what a cool game Firefly is and what great production qualities it has. Part of the fun was setting-up the game and being amazed at how many components there are and they all work so well together.
In my next game I am going to count the number of turns I play, which will set a benchmark to try and beat the next time round, setting a new challenge time I play. I didn’t count the first time round, and I would encourage you to do so if you are like minded.
I think a few more games may see some other solo variations to the rules. I am thinking of a random chance of removal of discard items from the game, or additional movement for the Cutter and Cruiser. We shall see...
My next look at a game may well be Dr Who, Time of the Daleks, not labeled as one player on the box, but has potential I think.
Stay safe in your Verse.

Firefly Adventures: Find a Crew - Find A Job - Keep Flying

With Joe Kepler

Joe is a regular contributor back to the design team, as well as in our Facebook group. We asked him, as a solo player, to explain what makes Brigands and Browncoats so engaging.

Firefly Adventures as a Solo game is also fun and exciting, but for me it's different than just a race against the clock. The entire game is already set up as a race against the time track, but the aspect of Solo play feels different than Firefly the Game. It is much more immersive, with the different characters all working towards the common goal. The Role-play factor (for me) is much more pronounced than the 'race the clock' aspect. Depending on which crew you choose for the mission is also a huge factor in how you play because different crew abilities can drastically change how you play the scenario. Even the Scenario's themselves have elements in them which makes the job different every time, so much like the show, you just don't know what twist of fate things might take. These twists and turns bring an exciting element to the game play which adds to the game replay value. The different jobs, mixed with a different crew, mixed with the overall strategy of that crew to accomplish the mission make the game exciting as a Solo play adventure.

 Firefly Adventures

In short, Solo games for Firefly Adventures are not only about beating the mission, but about enjoying the story that gets told and getting immersed in that story for a couple of hours. That probably sounds goofy, but that's how I roll!
Practically speaking, I randomize a lot. If I'm playing a campaign, I randomly draw the jobs and randomly draw the crew. Solo games take roughly two hours each job. I'm constantly interrupted with family things, so I tend to leave the board set up in the 'game room' so I can go sneak off and play a couple of turns in-between the crazy times. I use all the official and fan made scenarios when I'm picking a job (we have 23 total jobs now), so it is rare to run the same job twice in a row.

Derelict By Christopher Schmitzand
Derelict is the second of the community created jobs that won our creation contest! This mission was created by Christopher Schmitzand is a unique mission that sees you boarding a derelict ship that was passing through Reaver territory to collect intel for your employer.

Check it out here!

"Your employer had some sensitive data he sent around the normal Alliance routes—that meant traveling through Reaver space. The transport had a full complement of passengers hopeful for a new life on the rim worlds at the fringes of Alliance control. They didn’t get what was expected. The craft is a total loss. It remains structurally intact, but has been dead in the water for weeks until its discovery and it bears the distinct marks of Reaver boarding. The find came across the Cortex and your employer needs you to collect his data before the Alliance arrives to claim it—and he’s willing to pay you well for your efforts"

Thanks again to Christopher Schmitzand and good luck to everyone trying this job! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more updates!

You can download it here!

To coincide with the revised rulebook we are also starting a How to Play series for Firefly Adventures. Starting with a quick video showing how to get the board set up and your crew ready to roll.

Firefly Adventures: Brigands & Browncoats
Gale Force Nine returns to the ‘Verse with Firefly Adventures: Brigands & Browncoats, a new cooperative game for 1 to 5 players. Play as the crew of Serenity and use a bit of fast-talking, a dash of technical know-how, a bit of misbehaving and a heaping helping of Thrilling Heroics to make sure the job gets done and you get paid!
Firefly: Adventures is a cooperative, mission based, skirmish-level game where the players use the different skills and abilities of Malcolm, Zoë, Jayne, Kaylee and Wash to succeed. The game contains two distinct miniature game pieces for each crew member, one in Casual relaxed pose, the other in a Heroic action pose. Crew may choose to Act Casual or Act Heroic and each pose has a unique set of actions that the Crew can perform on their turn, but be warned – while no one’s gonna pay much mind to someone with a casual demeanor, acting all heroic is sure to attract unwanted attention.

When you and the Crew get to work, a Job Briefing will tell you all you need to know; what your Crew needs to accomplish, how they might succeed and how long they have to get it done. Some Jobs are easier and faster, some are longer and more involved. What type of Job you want to tackle is up to you. You can work a single Job, or a series of Jobs, using the Credits you earn from one Job to equip the Crew for the next Job.
 Firefly Adventures: Brigands & Browncoats
Working a Job is never easy, there’s always some manner of malcontents standing in your way. You and the Crew are sure to run afoul of hired Goons, whether it’s a posse of unruly Cowboys or a gang of Eavesdown Docks Thugs. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to talk your way out of trouble or distract them with some technical know-what. If not, then the situation may require a bit of violence! Brigands & Browncoats includes ten unique detailed Goon game pieces; five Cowboys and five Thugs.
Firefly Adventures: Brigands & Browncoats Kaylee & Equipment
The setting for Brigands & Browncoats is the rough-and-tumble Eavesdown Docks on Persephone. The game includes unique double-side map tiles and a collection of 3D buildings to create the world for your games. Take cover around the corner of a container building to avoid a hail of incoming fire or squeeze down a narrow alleyway to avoid wary Goons. Will the Crew be able to break into the secure building and get out with the loot in time?
Firefly Adventures: Brigands & Browncoats Game
Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats contains everything you need to play, 20 unique miniatures, equipment cards, hero cards, goon cards, skill test cards, map tiles, 3D building terrain and dice. In the future, the ‘Verse will continue to grow expanding your Crew with some notable passengers and persons while facing off against new opponents standing between you and yours.

Crime Pays - Booster & Accessory for Firefly: The Game
Getting’ the job done just got more interesting. The Crime & Punishment Game Booster for Firefly: The Game adds a whole heap of new troubles to the ‘Verse.
The Game Booster adds 40 new cards to the Misbehave Deck, presenting more hassles, hardships and the rare opportunity to those crews that might indulge in a bit of criminal behavior now and then. With new misbehave cards, your captains are gonna need new aces up their sleeves to get by; be it a piece of gear, the right crew, or the right relationship, just make sure you’re prepared.

Of course, when there’s trouble in the ‘Verse, you can be sure the Alliance won’t be far behind, new Alliance Priority Alerts put the screws to all thems that are just trying to make an honest (or dishonest) credit. Alliance Alerts affect the entire game, placing embargoes on a particular Supply Planet, forcing Contacts to lay low for a spell or stepping up Alliance Patrols. When the Alliance comes down, they don’t care who they wind up squashin’.
Firefly: The Game - Crime & Punishment
Two new Story Cards cater to captains who are willing to do anything to get by, some times, if you’re a bit lucky, you’ll find that crime does pay. Two new Set Up Cards also change how any game is played, one will make sure you and yours keeps flyin’ while the other one will insure that Alliance is always on High Alert. There’s always new tales to tell in the ‘Verse.
Firefly: The Game - Big Money Of course, when a captain does a job, they expect to get paid, that’s just business. GF9 will make sure your scores pay off big-time with the Big Money Deluxe Accessory. Big Money upgrades the paper money from the game with prop-sized versions of the bills, for a real fistful of credits when the deal is done. The paper money from Firefly: The Game has always been very popular, and we’ve had lots of requests to make it available separately for gamers, Browncoats and Firefly fans alike. Big Money also lives up to its name with a new denomination, a $5000 credit note, perfect for the biggest paydays.
Look for both the Crime & Punishment Game Booster and Big Money Deluxe Accessory in stores now! Buy them from your local shop or via the GF9 online store

Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand…

“After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terra-formed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.” – Shepherd Derrial Book

Firefly, the popular Fox television series created by Joss Whedon, comes to life in a new boardgame from Gale Force Nine. Compelling characters, great storytelling and an evocative universe have made Firefly a fan favorite for over a decade. Now fans of the television show and board games can agario chart their own course with Firefly: The Game.

In Firefly: The Game, players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, traveling the ‘Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics and other travelers. As a captain desperate for work, players are compelled to take on any job – so long as it pays. Double-dealing employers, heavy-handed Alliance patrols and marauding Reavers are all in a day’s work for a ship’s captain at the edge of the ‘Verse.
